FOCUS ON URGENT SERVICES LTD
In the hot seat this month is Derwent from Urgent Services Ltd.
Derwent is renowned for joining the committee meetings from a variety of vehicles, on the way to black tie events or delivering parcels! We are taking bets as to when he will appear from a Tuk-Tuk!
Q: What services do you provide at Urgent Services Ltd
We are primarily a same day delivery company, but with a few bells and whistles. There is lots of work in London, but saturation and undercutting make it a very difficult. We provide the usual bikes, parcel cars and small vans, but we have a fairly big fleet of larger vehicles like Luton Tail lift vans. We seem to have found a range of clients with a need for these types of vehicles, and who are happy to pay the right price for a job well done. We also provide UK Next Day and International, as well as long and short term storage in our warehouse.
One of our key services is helpers and porters for events. Most recently we obtained a TFL license to run passenger vehicles, which we hope will help us to attract more clients.

Q: Do you have any strange delivery stories/encounters from your time at Urgent Services Ltd?
Client called at 01:00 one Monday with 11 boxes to be in Berlin for a financial conference at 11:00 that day. After a bit of research, we told them we could do it, but it would cost £3,500. They reluctantly agreed as we were the only option who said they could meet the deadline, and we told them to have the boxes ready to go ASAP.
We boarded a first flight to Berlin at around 07:30 and landed at around 10:00 local time. We took a taxi to the conference centre where the driver helped us to rush the boxes to the conference room. Upon arrival we contacted the intended recipient, only to be told in a monotone voice, can leave them in the corner as we don’t need them until later in the week.
Q: What benefits has your NCDA membership brought to Urgent Services Ltd?
We are never alone, and whatever challenges we may face, somebody in the membership will have been through the same thing and can probably help. Unlike other associations, we have a membership of genuinely nice people who have experience of real issues, and who understand the challenges we all face in running our businesses.
It is also very extremely useful when we need help in other areas of the country, and we take confidence and reassurance dealing with people who we have a connection with.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the logistics sector?
I love a challenge, and the fun thing about logistics is the many different tasks we get to work on every day.
It’s never boring, unless its quiet, and whilst working in a team is not for everyone, I love my co-workers, and I am extremely proud of them.
Q: What is something unexpected about Urgent Services Ltd?
None of our employees have ever worked in logistics before coming to work with US! They are all home grown!
Q: If you could have dinner with 5 people dead or alive, who would it be and why?

My Dad
He died when I was 16 and I would love to ask him all the things that I never got to ask.

The Marks Brothers
These guys would have me laughing for hours!

Queen Elizabeth II
What a woman, what an inspiration, what stories she could tell me about all her Prime Ministers and the people she met.

Paolo Di Canio
Basically, the last West Ham player to wear the shirt with pride, passion, and with the ability to play with both feet. We’d have lots to talk about!

Mayor of London
Sadiq Khan
I don’t even want to have dinner him, 5 minutes should be enough.

Q: If you were stranded on a desert island, and you could only bring three things with you, what would you bring and why?
- My wife. Honestly, I Love being with her, she makes happy very day and at the age of 62, I want to spend as much time as I can with her. Yes, she is next to me!
- Music. I love Blues, Soul, Funk and Reggae, which is ideal for a desert island.
- Sun cream. If I am going to be stuck here, I may as well make the most it.
